CHAPTER 24

Krey

“Has it been quiet, Krey?”

I nodded as Aiden joined me where I stood guard outside of Quill’s room. He clapped me on the back. “I would tell you to get some sleep, but trust me, with the way Bezel snores, you will not. He is louder than a pike bull.”

I laughed. “Perhaps I should find you some of that bitter bean juice the humans are so fond of.”

Aiden grinned and took up the position outside Quill’s room. “I tried it once on a previous trip to Earth. The little female I spent the night with gave me some in the morning.”

“Did you like it?” I asked.

He shrugged. “It was too bitter for me, but she added some sweet powder. That made it -”

Our hands automatically fell to our swords when we heard the faint scream from the room next to Quill’s. My heart thumping hard, I hurried over to the door and knocked. “Madison, it is Krey. Open the door.”

Aiden started to join me, and I shook my head, indicating for him to stay in front of Quill’s door. “She has nightmares.”

His tense body relaxed, and he scanned the hallway as I knocked again. “Little human, open the door, please.”

The door eased open, and Madison, her eyes huge and her mouth trembling, stared at me. “What’s wrong?”

“I heard you scream,” I said. “Can I come in?”

“It was just a nightmare,” she said.

“I know,” I said.

She hesitated before stepping back. With a final glance at Aiden, I entered her room, shutting the door behind me. She’d turned on the lamp next to the bed, and I studied her in the dim light. She wore a long shirt that ended mid-thigh. My cock was already starting to harden, and I cursed my lack of self-control as I stared at her bare legs.

She smoothed her hair self-consciously before rubbing at her eyes. “Why were you outside my room?”

“I just finished my guard shift of Quill,” I said. “Your room is next to his.”

“Oh, right, of course.” She glanced at the clock on the nightstand. “Shit. I’ve only been asleep for a couple of hours.”

Her look was half resignation and half-panic. “I drank some tea with the dalis in it before bed and hoped that would help me sleep through the night. If I don’t get some sleep tonight, I’ll be terrible tomorrow at the meeting, and your king will leave me here on Earth.”

“He will not,” I said. “He is impressed with your abilities.”

“He hasn’t even seen my abilities yet,” she said.

“You handled the problem with the booking very well,” I said. “If it were not for you, we would not have had rooms.”

“We could have slept in the ship if we couldn’t get rooms,” she said.

“That is true, but the sounds and smells of the docking bay are unpleasant. You did very well in fixing the problem. Old Teo grows more forgetful by the day.”

She looked away. “Maybe he didn’t get the email.”

“He did,” I said. “He realized he had deleted the email and confessed to Quill his error this evening.
